Winter League
Dressage at Dryden 09 Dec 07
The third and final of EFRA's winter league show
jumping competitions was held at Dryden on Sunday. Entries were reasonable considering the miserable weather. The
highlight of the day was the fancy dress pairs relay. The fancy dress element, judged by Andrew and Virginia Grant,
was won by Laura Sanderson/Basil and Claire Crichton/Zed riding bareback and dressed as vaulters. The jumping element
was won by Cheryl Bunton/Just Jeremy and Augusta Greenlees/Chocolate who despite being very well disguised as Jack
and the Beanstalk managed to jump a fast double clear.
Katie Dun riding the striking Apaloosa Leo won the nursery class whilst Sam Anderson took the Nursery League title
with the Connemara Cragsyde Sapphire. Marita Gibson and George won the novice class and shared the title of Novice
league winner with Laura Sanderson and Basil. Last to go in the intermediate class, Fyonnah Thomas riding Advanta
Gold pulled off one of her trademark tight turns to win both the class and Intermediate League. The Open class
was won by Rhona Young riding Glenside Red Admiral whilst Gavin Lindsay with Cleo's Destiny took the Open League
title.
League winners for the indoor dressage series which finished last weekend were Claire Crichton riding Augusta Greenlees's
Chocolate (Preliminary A and Novice leagues), Jill King/Arnie (Preliminary B League), Felicity Peto/Spot the Difference
(Elementary League), Fiona Busby/Mr Beaujangles (Medium League). All winners will be awarded their prizes at the
Club Getotgether in February.
XC fences dismantled at Greenhill Nov 07
A group of members met at Greenhill
on Sunday to sadly dismantle the XC fences. This was necessary due to a change in circumstances, as announced at
the AGM. A huge thanks is due to the McAulays for the nearly 50 years of having this great facility. Many happy
hours have been spent on the hill and many now famous names have ridden round it.
A huge thanks also to the members who came on Sunday to help.
Winter League
Dressage at Dryden 11 Nov 07
Huge entries were received for the 2nd indoor dressage
league. 32 members competed in the Prelim .judged by trainee judge Francis Peto who went on later to win the Elementary
riding his wife's new horse Topper Nooy. The Prelim A section was a first win for Steph Brand riding Reece and
the B section was won by Arnie ridden by Jill King.
The Novice was a good win for East Lothian member Ruth Darling riding her impressive Highland Chesterhill Forrester
from Stacey Irvine riding Rakaposhi. A.M.
John Payne Memorial Trophy
Congratulations to Laura Sanderson and Paris for
winning the John Payne Memorial Trophy for the second year running. The trophy is awarded to the member with the
most points achieved at club competitions over the previous year and is presented at the AGM. Laura also gave an entertaining insight into being a team member and competing at the BRC
Championships at Lincoln.
Winter League
Show Jumping @ Dryden 21 Oct 07
Ettrick Forest's first show jumping competition
of the winter league series was held at Dryden on 21st October. It was good to see new faces competing both of
the human and equine variety. A double clear and a stylish second round secured 1st place in the Nursery class
for Sam Anderson with her 5 year old pure bred Connemara Cragsyde Sapphire on his competition debut. There were
five double clears in the Novice class but Helen Meikle had the fastest time in the jump off to take first place
with the four year old Bertie.
Despite a larger than normal entry in the Intermediate class there were only two double clears. Fyonnah Thomas
was the clear winner with Advanta Gold after taking a daring short cut in the jump off. Gavin Lindsay and Cleo's
Destiny won the Open with the only clear round of the class.
Thanks toj udge Jim Jeffrey and all the helpers who made the competition run so well. The next EFRA competition
is the indoor winter league dressage which will be held at Dryden on 11 November. The club will be holding their
AGM at Buccleuch Arms Hotel on 25th October.
BRC Championships
@ Lincoln 08 Sep 07
EFRA was represented at the BRC Championships in
Lincoln on 8th September by a Style Jumping Team, Intermediate Show Jumping team and Fiona Busby competing as an
individual in the Medium Dressage class. The teams did extremely well with both teams coming home with rosettes.
The style team - Helen Meikle/Inca, Jane Aitken/ The Rookie, Laura Sanderson/Paris, Nina Cessford/Cowdenknowes
Tikka competed against over 20 teams from all over the UK to take 2nd place. Laura Sanderson was placed 8th individually.
The Intemediate SJ team (as above but with Fiona Hutcheson/Keira replacing Jane Aitken) jumped very well to take
5th place over a difficult course of 12 fences which included many related distances, doubles and a treble. Fiona
Hutcheson and Keira excelled themselves, jumping 3 clear rounds, the third against the clock, to finish 3rd individually.
We are all very proud of them!

REPORT ON FUN
FUND RAISING DAY AT TIMPENDEAN ON 29TH AUG.
20 members enjoyed their chance
to do dressage and jump on grass and help raise money towards team travel. Fiona Busby and Mandy Edwards judged
PN 111 and Intro 101 with Karen Wardrop stewarding and running the Show cross. The course of 9 showjumps and 9
XC type fences was much enjoyed. Many thanks to the members who helped before and on the day. It was a pity it
was such short notice but despite this the grand sum of £400 was raised.

Area One Show Jumping and Style Jumping Qualifier @ St Boswells 24 Jun 07
Six EFRA teams competed successfully at the British
Riding Clubs Area One Show Jumping qualifier held at St Boswells Market on Sunday. EFRA teams were first and third
in both the Intermediate Show Jumping and Style Jumping, first in the Open Show Jumping, and 6th in the Novice
Show Jumping - an impressive achievement! The three winning teams qualified for the BRC Championships which will
be held in Lincoln in September.
The ground at St Boswells stood up to the recent heavy rain remarkably well but conditions did get increasingly
difficult for the competitors as the day went on making their job even more challenging. The winning Intermediate
team - Inca/ Helen Meikle, Paris/Laura Sanderson, Cowdenknowes Tikka/Nina Cessford, Keira/Fiona Hutcheson finished
on a great score of only 4 penalties after two rounds. Helen, Laura and Marita Gibson riding George were all on
double clears and so went through to the jump off to determine individual placings. Helen going first set a very
fast and unbeatable time, bravely taking all the short cuts to win individual first with the lovely grey Connemara
Inca. Marita and Laura were a very respectable 3rd and 4th respectively.
In the Novice class, team member Rachel Shiell riding Crink Law had the disadvantage of going first in the jump
off but went clear and with a good time to leave her in 3rd place as an individual.
There were only two teams in the Open competition but both only had three members so all scores counted making
it a very tense class to watch. The EFRA team of Borthwick Emerald/Lindsay Dun, Dundrum Sam/Katie Dun and Polaryse/Duncan
Tait did a fantastic job to win on very slippy ground. Lindsay was the only competitor in the class to jump a double
clear and so was the clear winner of the individual competition with Katie achieving an individual 3rd place.
The last class to finish was the Style Jumping and they had to bear the worst of the weather. It is difficult enough
trying to jump without penalties in a torrential downpour never mind having to do it in good style as well! The
winning team of Paris/Laura Sanderson, Chocolate/ Augusta Greenlees, Glenside Red Admiral/Karen Gillie and The
Rookie/Jane Aitken commented that qualifying for the Championships more than made up for getting a little wet.
The individual competition was won by Laura, with Nina in 3rd place and Karen in equal fourth.
The club members who organised and helped at this area qualifier must also be mentioned as they did a great job
in ensuring its success and visiting teams commented on what a good day they had had despite the weather! Good
luck to all the qualifying teams at the Championships.

DC Dalgleish Summer Show Jumping League Final at St Boswells Market 13 Jun 07
The third and final of the DC Dalgleish (Tartan
Specialists) Summer Show Jumping League competitions was held at St Boswells Market on 13th June. The league, run
by Ettrick Forest Riders Association, was open to all and all three competitions had been very well supported by
local riders.
Gavin Lindsay riding Cleo's Destiny won the nursery class on Wednesday night with a fast jump off against the clock,
narrowly beating Tracy Mackay and Prince Diaro for the overall Nursery League title. Rachel Shiell and Crink Law
won the Novice class on Wednesday but Duncan MacKay and Essenside Knocking Glass took the Novice League title after
being consistently placed. Heriot rider Lyndsay Dun and her mare Borthwick Emerald were in top form, winning both
the Intermediate class and also winning the overall Intermediate and Open Leagues. All League winners were presented
with a rug generously donated by the League sponsors DC Dalgleish.
Thanks must go to judge Jim Jeffrey, sponsors DC Dalgleish and to the club members who helped, in particular Jane
Aitken whose organisation ensured the smooth running of all three competitions. For full results see Results page.
Arena Event at
Riddell Estate 25 Mar 07
Ettrick Forest's first outdoor competition of the year was held on Sunday at Riddell Estate by kind permission
of Virginia and Andrew Grant. Both the weather and the going were excellent for the Arena Event, which consisted
of a dressage test followed by show jumping and 'cross country' over rustic fences contained within an arena. A
flowing show jumping course ensured several clear rounds. However, the cross country didn't prove so easy with
the stile catching many out.
The Intro class had a large entry with many young horses competing for the first time at an arena event. Time faults
in the cross country round decided the placings in both sections. Section A was won by Lanarkshire-based Shireen
Daneshvar with Jack of All Trades, the only combination in their section to jump within the optimum time. Section
B winner, Janet McRitchie with Craggy, jumped an impressive double clear in great style to finish on her dressage
score, the only rider to achieve this in the whole competition.
Competitors in the Pre-novice class attacked the cross country round with more pace, all completing within the
optimum time. Laura Sanderson and Paris had a good dressage score to win the class from Fyonnah Thomas and Advanta
Gold in second place.
Heriot-based Katie Dun with Dundrum Sam produced a good dressage test and a fast cross country round to make them
clear winners of the small Novice class.
Many thanks to judges, Heather Stirrit, Fiona Busby and Jim Jeffrey and all the helpers who made the day run smoothly.

Catriona Arres Memorial Training
Grant
Lynsey Smith was the proud recipient of the inaugural Catriona Arres Memorial Training Grant presented by Les Smith
at Ettrick Forest's Annual Getogether. The training grant will be awarded annually to the EFRA member who has shown
the most progression throughout the year. Tutti had done so much for training club members, particularly those
with young horses that it was felt that this would be a fitting way to honour her memory. In February last year,
Les ran a very well supported Grasshoppers Training Competition, with the input of Ian Stark and Muriel Colquhoun,
to raise money to fund the grant.
This year's recipient, Lynsey Smith, has achieved a lot with Atlantic Connexion (Billy) in the short time she has
owned him. At 25, Lynsey is one of the club's younger members and an incredibly dedicated one, with multiple jobs
to support her hobby. Billy was bought as a very green 6 year old at the end of 2004 but in 2005 the pair completed
two British Eventing Intro horse trials with a 6th place at Hendersyde. In 2006 they moved successfully up to Pre-novice
completing six events including a 3rd place at Hopetoun horse trials. They successfully represented EFRA at Area
competitions on Intermediate Show Jumping, Equitation Jumping and Intermediate Horse Trials teams, qualifying for
the Championships on the latter two of these teams, and taking an individual 1st place at the Horse Trials qualifier.
Lynsey then went on to achieve an impressive 4th place as an individual at the Intermediate Horse Trials Championships.
Lynsey is quick to acknowledge all the help and support she has received from within the club both in terms of
training and general encouragement. Lynsey received a lot of help from Tutti when she first got Billy and subsequently
Ann Cranston and Jenny Stark have played an important role in their training. Lynsey is also fortunate to have
a very supportive mother.
Lynsey's aim for 2007 is to take Billy to BE Novice and to complete Thirlestane Castle Horse Trials. This year
she will also be competing Debbie Whalley's Highfield Boy at BE Novice and hopes to start Clive Storey's Whizzabit
at Intro level. Lynsey says she is delighted and extremely proud to receive the training grant and that she will
be using at least part of it to fund her dressage training.
