2011
Sorry for the delay in getting this sent to Fyonnah for
the web.
The horses and riders set off on Friday for Hartpury for the Riding Clubs Winter Championships. Our team of Wendy
Taktiform, Rhona Quin Kannan, Laura/Andys Law and Sandra Grieve/Beltoy had qualified in the autumn for the Dressage.
Unfortunately, Sandra was unable to go for various reasons so Jill King/Arnie kindly stood in.
An uneventful journey in the care of Clive driving Gillies lorry meant 4 relaxed horses. Fiona and I drove down
and arrived shortly after the horses. After settling in, the horses were loosened up and then did some work under
the watchful eye of Fiona. The girls settled them for the night and we went off to the pub for supper taking Clive
with us. We all stayed in a great B and B close by and all had a comfortable and early night. Horses were fed at
7 the next morning and then we all had our breakfast. Jill was first of the team to go and did a lovely test for
70%, Laura followed into the Preliminary arena to do a very correct test for 68%.After lunch Rhona performed a
steady and level test for 62% and then all the pressure was on Wendy. She really did hold her nerve, its always
difficult to be the last to go!, to ride the test of her life for 75%.
Well ----the nerves started to really go as looking at half the results we knew we were there or there abouts but
not sure as the results were so slow to be put up. THEN there was some uncertainty about the scoring so Muggins
here approached the competitions chairman who explained the matter. We then knew that our team had indeed won and
that Wendy had a 2nd, Laura and Jill 3rds which were then converted by NORMALISATION??!! Because there were 4 judges
rather than 2. Please don’t ask why.!! Wendy 2nd, Laura 7th, and Jill 4th. With the teams 1st.
It was a tremendous effort from 27 teams of very high class horses and ponies as the overall champion was a New
Forest pony—anyone know where I can find one!!
WELL DONE the girls.

NB. Winter Championships held 2nd/3rd April 2011 @ Hartbury College, Gloucestershire
Sep
After some hiccups in the last week--
12 horses, riders and families set off for the Riding Clubs Championships at Lincoln. Horses and people travelled
well and arrived safe and sound about 4pm Friday.
Saturday dawned damp but weather improved to a lovely day.
The Open dressage team of Toux Camelot/Carolyn Gospel, Quin Kannan/Rhona Young, Arnie/ Jill King and late substitution
Willamy Twinkle(owned by Carolyn)/Laura Sanderson were a creditable 4th . Sorry Wendy couldn't be with us as she
had been bucked off last week but Laura was a good Sub. Rhona had the pleasure of a mounted prize giving as she
was 3rd in her arena.
The Style Jumping team were also well up and a close 6th
from 20 teams. Paper Classic/ Sarah Page, Spicey Lady/Emma Soeder, Cheeky Charlie/ Fiona Hutcheson and Crinklaw(Last
of the Nonas)/Rachel Shiell.
Well done everyone one who represented the club. They were all great competitors and all helped each other.
Thanks also to husbands, fathers, mothers and daughters who all supported and made the weekend a good one.
The Novice horse trials team travelled
to Aston Le Walls, Northamptonshire this weekend to represent the Area 1 in the Championships. The weather was
excellent and the going firm.
The team of Chino/Cath Cotton, Paper Classic/ Sarah Page, Quin Kannan/Rhona Young and Cowdenknowes Tikka/Nina Cessford
travelled south on Friday in Gillies lorry to compete on Saturday and Sunday. Dressage and show jumping on the
first day with roads and tracks , steeplechase and cross country on the second day.
The girls had worked very hard to have horses fit enough for the competition and travelling and they all looked
fit and well.
A briefing and course walk on Saturday by Donald Kear set them up for the endurance day.
They all performed reasonable tests with Rhona being best with a 30 mark. In the show jumping they finished with
2 clears and 2 4faults so it was all to play for on Sunday.
They all were on time through the first 3 phases and the steeplechase warmed them up for the cross country which
was beautifully built and fairly challenging.
Three went clear and two within the time which left them in 13th position from nearly 30 teams. Nina was our best
individual finishing a well deserved 9th.
Thanks are due to My Team Course Builders and the back up helpers, well done girls you did well.

Ettrick Forest Riders Association Awarded
'British Riding Club of the Year'
On Thursday 19th November Ettrick Forest Riders Association (EFRA) braved the floods and storms to travel to Saddlers
Hall in London to accept the 'British Riding Club of the Year' award. EFRA are the first Riding Club ever to win
this National award.
Representatives to accept the award on behalf of EFRA were : Club Chairman Fiona Busby, Chef d'Equipe Anne Millar,
British Riding Club National Pairs Champions, Laura Sanderson and Janet McRitchie and the British Riding Club National
Open Dressage and Team of Four Champions Jane Aitken, Wendy Bell, Carolyn Gospel and Rhona Young. The award, a
beautiful bronze statue of the famous Dressage stallion 'Dutch Courage', was presented by Desi Dillingham MBE,
President of the British Horse Society, at a presentation to mark the efforts made by various individuals, clubs
and associations who had contributed to the BHS and horse welfare in general.
Desi explained that points had been awarded to teams and individuals representing clubs placed at the five National
Championships held throughout 2009. EFRA had 10 different riders and horses competing in 6 different team events
at the National Riding Club Championships in September and had also qualified for the Winter Dressage and Show
Jumping Championships back in February 2009. As well as the team members mentioned above, Claire Crichton, Lindsay
Dun, Katie-Jo Walling and Sarah Bett had also travelled to Lincoln in September resulting in a team 4th in the
Riding Test and various other individual placings. These results were key as all the team and individual placings
counted towards winning this prestigious award.
Special mention was given to Fiona Busby and Anne Millar who had braved all weathers throughout the year to ensure
everyone was as prepared as they could be for the Championships. Thanks were given to local sponsors 'nixon.hayandstraw.co.uk'
and all of the club members who had assisted in various fundraising activities and travelled to the many venues
to support the teams throughout this amazingly successful year..
Winter Dressage Qualifier Nov 09
The club has continued its winning ways by being successful at the Area 1 Winter Dressage Qualifier held at Sandyflats,
Glasgow.
The team of Lindsay Dun riding her homebred mare Shoestanes Sapphire, Laura Sanderson/Andys Law, Jane Aitken/The
Rookie and Wendy Bell/Taktiform taking the class from 21 other teams from all over the South of Scotland. Jane
and Wendy both won their arenas and Laura and Lindsay had placings.
This qualifies them for the Championships at Hartpury, Gloucester in April which is where their winning form started
last year.

REPORT FROM Area 1 dressage qualifiers.
The club has had a terrific weekend winning all the Dressage qualifiers run by Polnoon Castle RA at Drumclog, near
Strathaven.
On Saturday the team of Janet McRitchie/Craggy, Laura Sanderson/ Braincroft Cameron aka Basil, Lindsay Dun/ Shoestanes
Sapphire and Claire Crichton/Chocolate won both the Riding test and the Novice dressage. It was a close fought
finish to the dressage as South Lammermuir finished on the same score but as our girls had a better 4th score they
won.
In the Riding test Laura and Lindsay won their arenas with Claire and Janet close third. Individually in the dressage
Janet was third with the other three 5th and 6th=.
Sunday had a leisurely start with Craggy and Basil repeating their Pairs Dressage win of last year and Wendy Bell/
Taktiform and Rhona Young/ Glenside Red Admiral aka Chester finishing 2nd.
The Open Team of Wendy and Rhona were joined by Carolyn Gospel/ Tout Camelot and Jane Aitken/ The Rookie all performed
very good tests to finish 1st from 10 other teams.
Individually Carolyn won the Medium class and was 2nd in the Elementary behind Wendy who won her Novice 30. Rhona
won her Novice 25 with Jane 2nd in this and also Novice 27.
What a tremendous effort and amny thanks to the teams who represented the club very well and to all the backup
team and not least to Fiona who trained them. Well done all and heres to Lincoln.
Obviously fund raising will be required for this trip so do come along and support the next 2 competitions when
ways to raise money will going on.
A Dressage, Showjumping and Cross country tarining day will also be held so watch the website form dates and venue.

The club has had two very busy Sundays with a good competition at Timpendean on the 14th when the weather could
not decide what to do and there were several very wet competitors and there was even talk of a wet tee shirt competition!!
The dressage judged by Claire Botterill and Richard Begbie had some high scoring and some new faces (and old) to
the fore.
Jane Aitken had built an interesting show jumping course with related distances and doglegs which needed good technique.
There was again a good standard and many members took the chance to jump on good going.
Results to be seen on the results page.
Sunday the 21st saw us off to Biggar for the Area 1 show jumping qualifiers. The lead up to this was a bit worrying
as we needed to use all the reserves and more! First Lauren's horse's flu injections were not all recorded on her
passport, then Bally was sold, then--Jennifer Stott had a fall so thankfully reserves were up and running.
The teams were Novice: Jane Aitken/ The Rookie, Lindsay Dun/ Shoestanes Sapphire, Lyndsey Miller/ Just Charlie
and Political Sox!! Katie Jo was bucked off on Saturday and was very very sore but she was determined not to let
us down. However after some medical advice from Claire she decided that she could not ride. Thiswas decided 20minutes
before she awas due to jump and so up jumped Sarah Johnstone ! Complete in Katie Jo's clothes she jumped a lovely
clear round.
After 2 round we were the only team on 8faults so had a good win. Lyndsey jumped off for Individual place and was
2nd.
The Style teams were Claire Crichton/Chocolate, Lindsay/ Sapphire, Rhona Young/Glenside Red Admiral(Chester), Sarah
Bett/Katinka and they won with NinaCessford/ Tikka, Sarah/ Sox, Lyndsey/Charlie and Jane /Roo a close3rd. Individually
Claire was 2nd, Lyndsey 3rd and Nina 4th.
We then went on to the Intermediate with Chocolate, Katinka, Chester and Tikka. The course was up to height with
long distances. The girls all rode well and jumped their horse very effectively. Rhona jumped a double clear and
was first to go in the jumpoff. Chester was as honest as ever and gave her another lovely clear to finish 5th against
the clock.
Well done girls and thank you all the helpers. Next to the Dressage on the 18th/19th July.
EFRA TEAM NEWS FOR EVERYONES INTEREST.
There has been a change in the dates for the Area Dressage Qualifiers and they are now to be run on the 18th and
19th July. at Drumclog.
Showjumping and Style Jumping training will be held here at Timpendean on the 1st and 9th June starting at 6.30pm
onwards. Cost £5 per horse. Contact me for actual times.
Fiona will arrange dressage training with team members especially note at the WORKSHOPS so get your names in.
Fiona and I think that it is important to get teams together to help form team spirit.
Costs for team events>
The club pays all entries which at area level are Prelim entry to RC office £20 and £48 per team to
the area for running the competition. Horse trials are £ 36 to RC and £100 to the area.
Members pay their own travel.
If we are fortunate to qualify for the Finals the costs then rise dramatically for the CLUB.
Lincoln Championships are £84 per team £21 per individual, stabling £25 per horse per night.
Lorry usual cost is £1000 +vat. Members share of these costs is a percentage of half the travel ie usually
£120.
Riders then pay for their own food etc and usually sleep in the lorry or tents.
It is all great fun!!
To help offset these cost I am going to run Show/cross (show jumping and XC) here some time in June and July/August
so keep an eye on the webpage for definite dates.
Please feel free to contact Fiona or me for more information .
Cheers,
Anne
Report From Indoor Show
Jumping and Dressage Championship @ Hartbury (30/03/09)
The team had a great time, it was a
long journey 8hrs but all stood up well.
The dressage team were a well deserved 6th from 21 teams and Wendy was 8th Ind. and Jane 10th Ind. in the Novice
class.
Rhona and Claire both did up to scratch tests and were 12th and 20th. Both classes had 41entries.
The showjumping courses caught out a lot of horses including ours. It was brightly coloured and twisty. Guillie
and Rhona were stars and managed a lovely clear round in the first round. Unfortunately the rest all had faults
in the first round. Rhona and Wendy jumped in the second round and both had faults. Jane and Claire did not jump
again and we were able to set off up the road at 5pm instead of 8pm!!
We had a very happy 2days and the weather was reasonably kind. Again Ettrick Forest kept their name to the fore
and the girls did us proud.
Report from Ettrick Forest Riders Association (02/03/09)
Ettrick Forest Riders Association had
a busy and successful weekend. A dressage team of Rhona Young (Selkirk) riding Mr Guillie Rooney, Claire Crichton
(Newstead)/Chocolate, Jane Aitken(Riddell) /The Rookie and Wendy Bell(Clovenfords)/Taktiform travelled to Ingliston
Equestrian Centre, Bishopton, Glasgow to represent the club in the British Riding Clubs Area 1 Winter Dressage
Qualifier. Having won last year they were under much pressure to achieve the same result which they duly did with
3 wins from 4 tests. All riders and horses were extremely focussed and even managed to win and be second in warm
up classes. 20 teams from the south of Scotland took part. This team have also qualified for the Winter Showjumping
Championships and now travel to Hartpury College, Gloucestershire at the end of March for the British Championships.
On Sunday the club ran its final indoor competitions at Dryden Riding School. The real excitement of the day was
who was to win the inaugaral award of the Jean McAulay Memorial Cup. Jean had given to the club so much of her
knowledge and time it was felt this was a lovely way of remembering her and one of which she would have really
approved.. The cup was to be won by the rider and horse gaining most points in the Winter Dressage and Showjumping
competitions and after all the calculations were done Fiona Busby(Club Chair) had much pleasure in awarding it
to Rhona Young who with Mr Guillie Rooney had won or been placed in nearly all the competitions. Rhona was also
the winner of the Catriona Arres Memorial Training Grant presented at the recent Getogether. The last competitions
were well supported and again many new faces were in the money.
Novice Indoor Show Jumping Qualifier Feb 2009
A convoy of trailers might have been
seen leaving the Borders early on Sunday, this was two EFRA teams heading up to Oatridge to compete in the Area
1 Show Jumping and hoping to qualify for Hartbury. For some this was the first time they were competing in such
splendid surroundings, bright lights, music, banks of blue seats and flower pots scattered round the course!! Nerves
remained calm and Team 1 completed the warm up round as did Team 2 with all horses taking everything in their stride.
With that under our belt it was time for a lunch break, everyone shared their picnics, so a feast was had by all.
Before the qualifying rounds there was time to walk the course. The EFRA teams took their time with much counting
of strides and walking round looking at anything which might cause a problem. David Gatherer would have been proud
of them!! There were 19 teams of 4 horses and we were not on till the very end. This gave us plenty of time to
watch the other teams and see how the course jumped. Then time to get everybody ready, some went for a gander with
their horses and some went straight into the collecting ring where Annie was waiting to help everybody get warmed
up, "get a better canter" seemed to be a common phrase!! Each team had to jump a round and then they
all jumped a second round so it was a long haul and tricky keeping the horses switched on and the riders not too
nervous. Team1 achieved 2 clear rounds and Team 2 who were the last to go, (no pressure!), jumped SO well and were
just unlucky not to get the clear rounds needed, but what STARS they were. Now the nerves kicked in with two teams
in the jump off, Almond and Ettrick. Almonds 4 horses went first and clocked up 4 clear rounds, then it was us.
Once again No Pressure!! All four jumped their socks off and were unlucky to have two poles down. So, what did
EFRA come home with? 2 clear rounds which means they qualify to go to Hartbury.Team 1
Rhona Young/ Mr Guillie Rooney
Wendy Bell/ Taktiform
Jane Aitken/ The Rookie
Claire Crichton/ Chocolate
Team 2
Sam Anderson/ Cragsyde Saphrire
Lynsey Smith/ Atlantic Connexion
Katie Jo Walling/ Political Sox
Cath Cotton/ Chino
Team 1 were 2nd place out of 19 Riding Clubs
Rhona Young came 4th overall in the warm up round.
Team 2 were just out of the rosettes but came 7th and were magnificent.

Once again we set off South with our
trusty driver Alistair this time with an Intermediate SJ Fiona Hutcheson(Kiera), Nina Cessford(Cowdeknowes Tikka),
Angela Barrowclough(Willow) and Sarah Page(Paper Classic) and 3 individuals Rhona Young(Mr Guillie Rooney),Jill
King(Arnie)Laura Sanderson(Basil) and a pairs dressage Janet Mcritchie(Craggy) Laura Sanderson(Basil). This time
couldn't have been more different as it was pouring with rain and didn't stop…. We again settled the horses in
after we rode them. This time the lorry had to park on hard standing so we had a bit of a shlerp through the mud
and after a few hrs the grass which was between the stables had turned from green to brown slurry. This did not
deter us as we were happy as sand boys. This time we were a divided camp, the young ones in the lorry and the rest
of us in a travel lodge, l was in the latter so could dry my wet kit,how the others managed l do not know and take
my hat off to them (made off stern stuff). Sat was not any better weather wise and it poured off and on all day
the SJ practise area was a bog hole and like glue but again the actual SJ arena held up well in the difficult conditions
Fiona again did 2 great rounds just rolling a pole in the 2nd round, Nina in her usual style flew like the wind
but had the odd pole down and Sarah and Angela were superb and held up to the pressure and there 1st time South.
They ended up 8th.
All the dressage girls ended up 3rd, how chummy is that? l was in 1st at 9am and got in a bit of a tizz arriving
at the warm up not having my jacket but Basil and l cantered off to find Marita who saved my day. l did my test
in the dry but poor Rhona and Jill got soaked and Jill had to contend with warming up 3 times before she finally
got to do her test. Rhona had a super test on a pony that can be a bit of a handful but she had him under control.
Janet and l were 2nd last on in the afternoon to do our pairs and it was dry . Our gap into the arena was not very
wide and we had watched others walk in , Janet and l were meaning to trot in but l thought the gap too tight but
Janet stuck to her guns and we trotted good descion. We did a good test Janet doing the calls and l was so delighted
at our Med trot l forgot about the next movement as Janet said 1,2,3 ( l thought what ,what , what's next) canter
……so Janet sorry l was woefully late.
Our journey back was terrible re the rain but we were high as a kite. All l can say is Give teams a go its so much
fun
2007 Teams
Lincoln 07
We set off South with Gillies lorry with our trusty driver Alistair. The intermediate SJ team of Fiona Hutcheson
( Keira ), Nina Cessford(Cowdeknowes Tikka), HelenMeckiel(Inca) and Laura Sanderson(Paris) , the Style team of
Jane Aitken(The Rookie), Nina , Helen and Laura and Fiona Busby(Mr Beaujangles) doing Individual Med Dressage.
On arriving at the show ground in the baking heat we settled the horses in then had a wee ride. Our accommodation
was in the back of the lorry but Fiona and Annie went to a travel Lodge. In the evening we went to the hog roast
and quiz night JANE leading the way after ½ hr walking still hadn't found the place…….we did reach the venue
to find the Quiz in full swing so we fed ourselves and joined in on a fun night. Sleeping was interesting l felt
all the horses were tied up to our lorry as all l heard was kicking, snorting, neighing etc then after a restless
night Fiona gets up at 4am saying she could here Kiera neighing for breakfast, she assured us that was her feeding
time. What a night. .. The next day the ground was hard as a brick and the practice area was a dust bath ,it was
like riding in the fog but the actual arena ground was amazing and beautiful surrounded by a privet hedge. Fiona
had a fantastic 2 clear rounds and came 3th ind the rest of us had the odd pole down the 4th, 5th,6th and 7th teams
were all on 16 faults so combined times decided the places .We finished 5th overall. As for the Style team this
is judged on the rhythm of your horse and the riders position( so no aeroplane arms..guilty as charged..!) and
a mark is give for the start and end of cantering around and also every element you jump. We came 2nd as a team
Jane on "The Spooky Filler that's going to eat you Rookie" had a super consistent round, Nina on her
fab flying machine Tikka also had a lovely round, Helen with Inka looked super together and rode a good round.
Paris and l had a great ride and came 8th individual . The dressage was not easy for Fiona's horse as he did not
like the hard ground and he did not perform as well as he can go, always another year. Fun was had by us all.
